Bisexuality

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation in which a person can feel sexually attracted to their own sex and to the foreign sex at the same time.

What is bisexuality?

Bisexuality is a sexual orientation that, in its simplest form, is based on two sexes, namely the biological sexes. A bisexual person feels sexually attracted to each other, but also to their own gender.

In view of gender diversification, bisexuality can go further and also expand to other gender identities. But then most of the time there is no longer any talk of bisexuality, but people define their sexual orientation in a much more complex way. The word "bisexuality" contains the syllable "bi", i.e. the number two - which refers to the idea of ​​two genders.

But bisexuals who are interested in the unfamiliar and their own gender also define this interest differently. Some can well imagine building a love relationship with a person of the same gender that is just as equal as with a representative of the opposite sex. Other bisexuals, on the other hand, would only enter into a serious relationship with someone of the opposite sex, but sexual contact with the same sex is conceivable for them.

Some bisexual people say that gender simply doesn't matter in their minds. You fall in love with a person regardless of what “category” they are assigned to.

Function & task

Deviations from the opposite sexual orientation do not only occur in humans. They can also be observed in some species in the animal kingdom. With bisexuality, however, as with any other deviation, the question of a possible biological or evolutionary benefit still arises. Research on this is not very far advanced, as phenomena such as bisexuality or homosexuality have not long been socially recognized. Therefore, in earlier decades and centuries it was researched more like a disease and causal research, but less attention was paid to its potential benefit to society.

It is also conceivable that there is no explicitly required development of evolution behind deviations from the opposite-sex sexual orientation, but that it is one of many conceivable deviations that are not uncommon in nature (consider, for example, different hair colors without explicit use).

Love in general, i.e. between same-sex or opposite-sex partners but also in the area of ​​friendship, has the function of establishing and maintaining social contacts. Because no one can be alone in the long run without suffering psychologically or even physically. Love helps to make contacts and to keep them.

Illnesses & ailments

Bisexuality is one of those sexual orientations that have no disease value. In contrast to necrophilia, for example, a bisexual person is usually very well integrated into society and has no sexual problems simply because of bisexuality.

Bisexuality actually becomes problematic when it does not want to or is not allowed to be lived out openly. This can be the case in strictly religious societies and becomes a problem when a bisexual person falls in love with a same-sex partner. Because then a pressure of suffering arises, which can trigger depression, for example, because the person does not feel free.

A bisexual person can also put himself under this pressure if he does not admit the sexual orientation to himself and outwardly lives an unfulfilled heterosexual life. This person may feel that he is sexually oriented differently than expected. If he suspects bisexuality, his own difficulties in accepting it can lead to emotional problems - but he can also be clueless about why he feels so different.
