A Epilator is an electrical device that is used for hair removal. With this method, the hair is removed right at its root. An epilator can be used on different areas of the body and guarantees smooth skin for several weeks.

What is an epilator?

An epilator is an electrical device used for hair removal and is characterized by the fact that it removes the body hair at the hair root and not just cut off the surface of the skin.

The device is equipped with a system of tweezers, so that hair regrowth usually takes four to six weeks. While the advantage of epilation is that it is long-lasting, the disadvantage of epilation is that it is painful and skin irritation often occurs after the procedure.

Shapes, types & types

Epilators come in different shapes and sizes. Depending on the model or with the help of special attachments, hair on the legs, under the armpits, in the genital area or on the face can be removed. However, the application in the last three areas can be very joking, as the skin there is much more sensitive than on the legs. Each user should decide for himself whether the use there makes sense.

Epilation of the legs is the classic type of application. Due to the high demand, however, there are more and more epilation devices that also allow the epilation of other parts of the body. Some epilators were made for different parts of the body from the outset and can therefore be used universally. Others also offer special attachments so that hair can be removed from hard-to-reach and sensitive areas.

Some models also have so-called hair-lift technology, which ensures that the hair lying flat on the skin is straightened.

Overall, there are two types of epilation: the temporary and the permanent process. The temporary procedure tears out the hair while the root remains in place. Regular use is therefore necessary. In the permanent procedure, the hair root is destroyed by means of a laser treatment (electroepilation) so that no more hair can grow back. However, the use of this procedure must be carried out by a specialist, while the temporary procedure can be carried out at home with the help of a suitable device.

There are also wet or dry epilators. Wet epliers have a battery instead of a cord and can therefore be used in the shower or bathtub without any problems. Dry epilators, on the other hand, must never be used when they are wet due to the risk of electric shock. Some of the epilators are equipped with an additional massage function to reduce pain.

Structure & functionality

An epilator looks similar to a razor, but the way it works is different. While a razor has blades and only cuts the hair on the surface of the skin, the epilator tears it out of the skin. Special tweezers are used for this, which rotate and tear out the hair at the root. Up to 50 tweezers can be integrated in one device.

A prerequisite for epilation is that the hair to be removed has a length of two to five millimeters. Before epilation, the skin can be freed from flakes and creams with the help of a peeling. Warm water also opens the pores so that the skin is more relaxed and less sensitive.

To alleviate the pain of epilation, it is advisable to use devices that have a cooling or massage function. The use of ice cubes to cool the skin before epiliation is also useful for pain relief.

Apply very carefully under the armpits and in the bikini line, as the skin is very sensitive there. If the pain is too great, the user should rather refrain from using it. In addition, the hair in the genital area is usually thicker and harder, so that epilation causes greater pain.

The stress can cause skin irritation after the treatment, which can be soothed with creams. Products that contain aloe vera, chamomile or allantoin are particularly suitable. Redness and slight swelling of the skin are normal the first time they are used and usually decrease significantly after a while.

Apart from the fact that epilation is usually associated with pain, there are many advantages that speak in favor of using epilators. For one, epilation is a great way to rid the skin of hair for long periods of time. By pulling the hair out at the root, the hair needs some time to grow back to the surface of the skin.

A good epilator costs on average around 60-70 euros to purchase, but there are no additional costs. When waxing or shaving, however, new blades or wax strips are regularly required.

A good epilator usually lasts about three to four years with regular use. Another advantage is that the hair becomes thinner and softer over time and hair growth is generally reduced. In addition, the various parts of the body can be epilated in almost any length of hair. When waxing, however, they must have a permanent minimum length of about 4mm, so that the hair has to grow back again and again in between.

In contrast to shaving, epilation does not require any preparation and can be used without a bath or shower. With the help of wireless models, epilation can even be carried out on the go.

It can happen that some hair grows back between the layers of the skin after epilation and does not penetrate all the way to the surface. This can lead to small inflammations at the hairline. However, this is not a health problem. In addition, a peeling can loosen the hair from the layers of the skin.
