As a result, the bacteria in the mouth receive an excess of “food” which, when broken down, produces foul gases. Therefore, drinking enough fluids can help prevent bad breath.
Natural yoghurts without added sugar are an effective help against bad breath. The lactic acid bacteria it contains reduce the level of hydrogen sulfide in the mouth, which is responsible for the bad smell. During a study it was found that test subjects who ate natural yoghurt daily had noticeably less hydrogen sulfide and plaque in their mouth after a few weeks.
Quick help
Herbs serve well in a "garlic flag". Intensive ten-minute chewing on fresh parsley, peppermint or sage quickly makes the breath smell pleasant again. It is not yet known exactly what this positive effect results from. However, it is assumed that the odorous substances are bound by the chlorophyll.
Ginger, cardamom, juniper berries, fennel seeds or coffee beans also help against intense bad breath. Dried seeds of dill, aniseed or caraway are also helpful.
According to a study by Ohio State University, milk can neutralize half of all sulfur compounds in breath. If garlic is consumed too richly, however, the characteristic smell also exudes through the skin and is also excreted from the lungs through the air we breathe. Therefore it can neither be completely suppressed with herbs nor with milk, but only mitigated.
Menthol pastilles and chewing gum stimulate saliva formation and thus prevent the accumulation of food residues and the subsequent colonization of bacteria.

Some of the most effective home remedies include mouthwashes with sea salt and gargling with salt water. There are different concentrations for this in the literature. However, the isotonic solution with 0.9 percent sea salt is most recommended. Rock salt is an alternative. Table salt is not recommended due to the chemical additives it often contains. Iodized salt is also less suitable, as there is a risk of taking in too much iodine.
If you have no problems with the taste that takes getting used to, you can gargle with tea tree oil. This was already used by the Australian natives to treat sores in the mouth, infections and colds. The antimicrobial effect has already been thoroughly researched and proven. Another way to combat bad breath is to "pull oil". For this, vegetable oils are used, which are moved back and forth in the oral cavity for a few minutes and are repeatedly pulled through between the interdental spaces. Then the oil is spat out and the mouth is rinsed with water.
Gargling tea also helps relieve bad breath. The ingredients of black tea inhibit bacterial growth and thus the production of hydrogen sulfide. Elderberry tea has a calming and antiseptic effect. Chamomile tea, one of the most famous home remedies, also has a corresponding effect.
If the bad breath comes from the stomach, a cure with propolis, a resinous mass produced by bees with an antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal effect, is also recommended.
