The Mesotherapy is an alternative medical healing method that combines the elements of acupuncture with those of injection and reflex zone therapy and uses microinjection to inject mostly natural, low-dose and individually composed active ingredients into the skin areas of the body parts that cause problems for the patient.
With the injection, a skin depot forms as a carrier of the active ingredients, which gently and continuously releases the substances to the organism, so that in addition to an immediate effect, positive effects can be achieved in the long term using the therapy method. Although the patient benefits from the low side effects, the low expenditure of time and the gentle effectiveness of the procedure, the effectiveness of mesotherapy has not yet been proven in clinical studies, which has so far prevented the health insurances from paying the costs for mesotherapy measures.
What is mesotherapy?
In mesotherapy, the doctor applies low-dose conventional and homeopathic medicines to the patient's skin.In 1960 the French doctor Michel Pistor developed mesotherapy, an alternative medical treatment method based on acupuncture. At that time, Pistor combined elements of neural therapy, reflex zone therapy and injection therapy with the acupuncture components.
In mesotherapy, the doctor introduces conventional and homeopathic drugs in low doses into the patient's skin, from where they are supposed to act on deeper tissue. In this form of therapy, the therapeutically important active ingredients are usually vitamins and trace elements, whereby the doctor or alternative practitioner is responsible for the respective combination.
Mesotherapeutic measures therefore differ according to the personal preferences of the attending physician. While mesotherapy is rarely used in Europe today, with the exception of France, the treatment method is very popular in the USA and Canada.
Function, effect & goals
Mesotherapeutic measures should be able to help in the fight against various diseases. The most common areas of application include circulatory problems, disorders of wound healing, keloids, rheumatic diseases and arthritis. The therapy method is also used against damage caused by overload, immune deficiencies, cystic fibrosis or asthma. Just as many patients choose mesotherapy procedures in the fight against hair loss, infertility or irritable bladder.
The same applies to patients with a state of exhaustion, disturbed sleep behavior, chronic headaches or presbyopia and senile hearing loss. In the USA in particular, people who are most likely to receive mesotherapy for cellulite and obesity. Another, relatively common area of application for the alternative medical method is worldwide incurable diseases, against which conventional medicine has not yet offered a sufficient number of promising therapeutic options.
During mesotherapy, the patient presents his or her ailment to the doctor as precisely as possible. The attending doctor or alternative practitioner then compiles the active ingredients for the therapy according to the patient's individual needs. He injects these low-dose active ingredients into the skin with fine needles. As the injection site, he selects the area to which the patient complains of complaints. Since the active ingredients are injected directly into the site of the complaint in this way, smaller amounts of the drug are required. The microinjections should be able to develop better effects than simply applying the respective substances to the skin.
At the same time, the method is much more pleasant for the patient than injecting with a conventional syringe, because the injection needles used in mesotherapy are only a few millimeters long. During treatment, these tiny needles stimulate the tissue in the problem area, promoting both local blood flow and oxygenation. The injection forms a skin deposit that carries the respective active ingredients. If necessary, the substances are later gradually released from the skin depot and distributed in the organism.
This allows an immediate, but also longer lasting effect to be achieved through mesotherapy. Due to diffusion processes, the active ingredients also penetrate deeper body structures, but hardly reach the bloodstream and thus protect the organism. Acupuncture points also play an important role during the injection process. The attending physician determines the weighting of the individual treatment components and alternative medical procedures.

Mesotherapeutic combinations of individual active ingredients usually rely on a natural basis. As a result, they are largely well tolerated by the patient and can sometimes also be used if the patient is simultaneously following conventional medical treatment methods or is being treated with conventional drugs.
In mesotherapy treatment, the injection of the substances feels similar to acupuncture for the patient. This makes the therapy a rather gentle method that is not associated with pain. Since the active ingredients hardly reach the bloodstream due to the fine microinjection needles, the patient's organism is practically not burdened by the therapy method. Side effects can occur depending on the drug, but they usually only occur in rare cases due to the low dosage of the drugs.
Mesotherapy combines this gentle mode of action with little time and material expenditure. A session lasts between a few minutes and half an hour. In Germany only doctors and alternative practitioners are allowed to offer mesotherapy procedures. Since the effectiveness of mesotherapeutic measures has not yet been proven by clinical studies, German health insurance companies usually do not or only rarely cover the costs for the procedure.
