With a vaccination the aim is to ensure that the person concerned does not suffer from a certain type of illness. The procedure is very simple and painless. On the other hand, those who do not have a vaccination often risk their own health.

What is a vaccination?

In the vaccination it is a medical measure to prevent temporary or chronic diseases. As a rule, the drug that is introduced into the body during the vaccination itself contains a weakened form of the pathogen against which it is supposed to strengthen the body.

Such immunization is mainly injected directly into the blood or muscles, but it can also enter the body through the mouth and anus. Vaccination is therefore a quick and uncomplicated procedure that should be carried out before traveling or at certain time intervals.

In addition, it is particularly important for small children to use this form of infection protection. In exceptional cases, the vaccination can be associated with side effects.

Function, effect, application & goals

A vaccination is used where the organism itself is too weak to react to impending threats. This is regularly the case with newborns and toddlers up to around three years of age. With them, care must be taken that the body, which is still susceptible, receives the necessary vaccinations.

But even with adults it may be necessary at intervals of a few years to rule out threatening diseases such as tetanus with such a vaccination. The same applies to trips to countries whose flora and fauna differ from ours and where infection with tropical diseases is not infrequently to be expected. Vaccinations should also be used against this in advance.

The process is always different and subject to change. The following applies: The serum should reach the organism painlessly, easily and quickly. This is the only way to ensure that the vaccination can work effectively. As a rule, this is done via a syringe, in which a certain amount of the substance for vaccination is administered directly into the blood or into the muscles.

Although this small needle prick makes the vaccination a little uncomfortable for many people, it also promises quick effectiveness. On the other hand, it is a little easier to take up the serum by mouth. Dropped on a sugar cube, the vaccination can mature into a little delicacy. This type of vaccination is called Oral vaccination.

Vaccination through the anus is also conceivable in the form of a suppository. The doctor should decide in each individual case what is used. Using a small booklet (vaccination card) that contains all previous vaccinations, he can inform the person concerned of further measures at the given time and thus monitor their constant use.

He will also know the best method of administering the vaccine for the impending disease and possible existing ailments. It is therefore not only decisive that, but also how the vaccination is carried out.

Risks & side effects

A vaccination should fundamentally protect against risks instead of being the trigger for them. Nevertheless, side effects are always recorded. As a rule, these are small marks that the needle leaves on the arm when vaccinated using a syringe.

This can cause itching and redness in the subsequent period. Serious pain, on the other hand, occurs very rarely, but cannot be completely ruled out. However, depending on the intensity of the preparation used for the vaccination, other physical symptoms can cause problems for the person affected: headache, nausea and vomiting, as well as diarrhea and pain in the abdomen are observed more frequently, especially with very aggressive substances for vaccination.

It is important for the doctor to recognize existing diseases and, in such a case, rather to forego the vaccination and to catch up on it at a later point in time. The doctor should also be able to give competent answers to possible risks and side effects. In addition, it is crucial that the vaccination is carried out regularly and thus can build up effective protection against diseases.
